Rapper French Montana was 13 when he immigrated with his family to the South Bronx of New York City from Morocco, not speaking any English. Over two decades and one platinum-certified album later, he s telling his story in a new documentary, For Khadija. It s just a real immigrant story. His father returned to Morocco while Montana s mother was pregnant with his youngest brother, leaving her to raise the three boys alone. Eventually, Montana found his voice rapping. A new study reveals sweepstakes, lottery and prize-related scams cost Amer adidas samba icans millions of dollars each year. The Better Business Bureau calls these schemes some of the most serious and pervasive frauds operating today. In the past three years, the group says more than 460,000 Americans have reported losing a total of over $330 million to such scams.The Better Business Bureau says these crooks are professionals, reports CBS News correspondent Anna Werner. They might take advantage of someone in your family, and they can be very convincing. Allen Walker had just moved to St. Louis in 2015 when the call came in on his cellphone, telling him he d won $94,000. It would be delivered soon and all he had to do was send in a fee to cover the taxes. They said congratulations, Mr. Walker, you have just won the Jamaican sweepstakes, Walker said. But the promised riches weren t delivered. They kept on telling me, Oh, well, he took the wrong route. He will be there soon, just wait. Walker sent in two checks t airmax otaling $5,500 ndash stanley cup ; all his savings. Still, he waited for the prize. Then he got repeated calls to send money to different people. That s when he realized it was a scam. I really felt kind of empty inside and ridiculous that I got, you know, beat like that, Walker said.Steve Baker, the lead investigator for the Better Business Bureau, says 2,820 people reported sweepstakes and lottery scams to the BBB s scam tracker in 2017. |
