About things to do in melbourne
Back when I initially began organising Melbourne tours with Autopia Tours a long time ago, I soon discovered this city has facets you won’t find in the tourist guides. The laneways hum with buskers, the Yarra River winds across stories that predate Federation, and the nightlife can carry you long past your bedtime. Be it day tours from Melbourne, you’ll find a city that’s got heritage, character and elegance in equal measure.
I’ve long explored wandering through the City of Melbourne, from the high-rise offices to the peaceful lawns of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, and whenever I wander, I discover something new. This blog is my take — part explorer’s handbook, part story, part resource — for anyone who wants to experience Melbourne like a true insider with real footsteps, not a polished ad.
Before we talk about Melbourne’s coffee craze and theatre scenes, it’s important to recognise the Traditional Owners of the land. The Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation have looked after Country here for tens of thousands of years. The Yarra River — or Birrarung as it’s traditionally known — isn’t just a backdrop for fitness lovers and rowers; it’s a living artery, core of Dreaming and cultural heritage.
Even today, the way the Victorian Government oversees the city’s growth, water supply and urban planning is connected with the river. The city’s very foundations, from regional drainage systems to flood protection and water restrictions, all hinge on how we relate to Country. To honour that heritage is to travel mindfully — pausing to listen to the narratives, not just capturing the urban view.
