The presbyteries voted 29-12 in support of the legislation in April, and the final Assembly gave its remaining approval on 23 May 2022 by 274 votes to 136. Reverend Scott Rennie, the minister of Queen's Cross Church in Aberdeen, welcomed the transfer, saying, "My marriage to my husband, Dave, nurtures my life and my ministry, and frankly I don't assume I could be a minister of this church with out his love and assist. It is at all times there within the background. Same-intercourse marriage is like opposite-intercourse marriage and it has its joys and sorrows, its glories and its tensions. It's fairly regular, really." The vote made the Church of Scotland the biggest church in the United Kingdom to allow same-sex marriages. Statistics revealed by the National Records of Scotland confirmed that 1,671 similar-sex marriages took place in Scotland in 2015. Of those, 935 were conversions from civil partnerships and 736 were new marriages. Of these, 7,366 were new marriages, while 7,732 have been conversions from civil partnerships. |
