Spacecraft instruments monitor our planet, but ground-based legwork to verify the measurements is an essential part of studying Earth from space, and Jet Propulsion Laboratory field researcher stanley and starbucks  Mark Helmlinger will share his experiences in southern Africa doing just that in public lectures to be held at JPL on Thursday, Jan. 25, and at Pasadena City College on Friday, Jan. 26.       Both lectures, called  Adventures in Africa: Earth Science Fieldwork for JPL,  begin promptly at 7 p.m. Park stanley cup ing is free and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.       Throughout Namibia, Botswana and South Africa, Helmlinger and his team made so-called  ground truth  measurements for NASA s Terra spacecraft. As he was brought to the police station, a rumor spread that he had been killed by the police. Neighbors, many of them residents of a nearby housing project, gathered outside the station, hoping to find out more. With no sign of Smith  who was beaten but not in fact killed , eventually the cro stanley quencher wd began to throw stones at the station windows. The National Guard was called in and a state of emergency declared.
