He returned to Broadway as Stanley Kowalski within the Tennessee Williams play A Streetcar Named Desire (1947), a task he reprised in the 1951 movie adaptation, directed by Elia Kazan. On tv, Brando won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his function within the ABC miniseries Roots: The subsequent Generations (1979), after which he took a 9-12 months hiatus from appearing. He additionally performed Sky Masterson within the musical movie Guys and Dolls (1955), Fletcher Christian within the action film Mutiny on the Bounty (1962), Jor-El in the superhero film Superman (1978), and as Colonel Kurtz within the Vietnam warfare drama Apocalypse Now (1979).
