Hello, dear readers. It's been a few weeks since I riled you up with controversial opinions on the likes of open floor plans and dumb phrases on indoor signs. Well, I'm back. And I'm back to talk about one of the most regrettable trends to ever hit the design world, one which still divides the industry today: karate-chop pillows. I've long hated the karate-chop (like any person with eyes), but my passion was reignited this weekend while at a hotel with a friend. As we left the hotel room, said friend-if she can even still be called that-proceeded to stand up off the sofa, turn toward its innocent, unsuspecting pillows, and descend on each with a sharp slice of her outstretched hand. Oh no, I thought to myself as I pondered the truth of this situation. My friend is a karate-chopper. If you read interior design magazines in the 1980s, you're likely familiar with this type: the method of arranging throw pillows not fluffed to inviting perfection, but sliced down the middle so that their top corners stick up like the ears of a nervous dog. Unlike some trends of the '80s I wouldn't mind having around (hello taffeta, chintz, and frilly curtains), this one has sorely overstayed its welcome. Luckily, I'm hardly alone in my opinion. Well Jan, neither can I. I completely fail to understand why the look of a decorative pillow smushed in half lengthwise, thereby distorting any pattern on it to unrecognizable confusion, is anyone's idea of a well-composed interior vignette. For the love of God, what did the poor pillows ever do to you? Simply fluff them up and let them be-trust me, your home will look better for it.
